A Certain Frank - Nothing
Dec 5, 23:48 by Stefan KoopmanschapBefore hearing this album, I knew nothing about A Certain Frank. I accidentally stumbled upon their music while listening to a last.fm station. I am happy I did.
People that know me a bit, know that I am really into laidback electronic music. Easy listening without the cheesy romantic lyrics, but driven by electronics. Lounge, downtempo, trip-hop, that kind of stuff. It is not hard to imagine then, that I also really dig A Certain Frank. This specific album, titled Nothing, brings that really loungy feeling from start to end, with a certain degree of variation to ensure that the album doesn’t get boring.
The album title, Nothing, is a good estimation of what I dislike about this album. In the wonderful 9 tracks on this album, I never once had a feeling something was wrong, missing, or too much. Starting with the title track, I get this nice feeling, slightly St Germaine, that really gets me into that laidback mood.
On track two, A Certain Frank use this completely fitting vocal singing Peace Again, which is the title of the track. It works, and makes this track to one of the best on the album. And on other tracks as well, the usage of just the right vocals complements the track, makes it work, solidly chilling.
Secret Love offers a slightly more uptempo feeling to the album, which works quite well and inspires heads to start nodding to the rhythm. The music is slightly more minimal though, but this seems to work quite well. It creates a bit of a dreamy feeling.
All in all, I really love this album, and am really glad that I encountered this music by accident. For people into loungy, laidback music, this is highly recommended listening.
