Mystical Sun - Deeperworlds

Nov 29, 21:51 by Stefan Koopmanschap

A good 5 years ago, when the old MP3.com was still active and the electronic community there was thriving, I wrote a review of an album that I found on that site, through that community. That album was After Materia Cloudland. In that review, I mentioned similarities with Future Sound of London and Enigma. Now, 5 and a half years ago, all of a sudden I encounter a new Mystical Sun album. Time for a closer look.

A very simple conclusion would be that Mystical Sun can still do it. Do it well, also. This album brings back some memories. Mystical Sun stayed true to his sound, with lush, melodic, dreamy melodies and nice laidback rhythms. There’s a definite reminder of the earlier mentioned album in the 4th track, Pure, which is very similar if not the same track as Something Very Pure of the original release (which unfortunately I can not find at the moment, so I can not do a real compare).

It’s funny how it works with music. A lack of development in music can be killing for some artists. I must say that I do not hear a real development in the music of Mystical Sun since 5 years ago. The music is still very similar in how it sounds and how it builds up. Yet, with Mystical Sun, this does not bother me at all. The quality is there, the variety is there, the feeling is there. It fits together, and still gives me goosebumps while listening to some tracks. Pure is definitely one, but Halo is another one that combines everything in just the right way to be simply perfect.

If you like a fusion of electronica, ambient, with a pinch of world music, definitely do check out the previews. The album is available from december 21st, 2006. After listening to the previews, by that time you will probably really really want it.

Update (04 december 2006): After some clarification by Richard (Mystical Sun), I have to add a note to this review. It seems that the music of this album is a reflection of the past decade, so it is a combination of old and new music. Because of that, my comment on “the lack of development” of Mystical Sun is not placed well. After this clarification, I must say I am looking forward to new Mystical Sun material.
