LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Jul 23, 20:44 by Stefan KoopmanschapThis review is very very long overdue. Now, this has happened to me more than once, but this time round it was not just a lack of time preventing me from writing a review. It was also a lack of words. And not even because this was so clearly a very good or bad release. Well, maybe it is very good, and that is the reason. But LCD Soundsystem just has this very specific style of music as well. Something I’m not used to. Something special.
The debut album by LCD Soundsystem was nearly unanymously welcomed as legendary at the moment of release. Two years have passed since the year 2005 when the debut hit the streets, and LCD Soundsystem (James Murphy) is attempting it again. Sound of Silver is his second album.
I find it hard to give this music a name, but Wikipedia does a good job by dubbing it Dance-punk, a style that combines electronic rhythms with “punk rock aesthetics and instrumentation”. This is a very good description of LCD Soundsystem’s music, I guess, and Sound of Silver fits in well. On the first listen, the style may strike as odd, but as you listen more and more to this album, it really grows on you, until the point where, at least for me, I kept listening to this album on repeat.
The opening track Get Innocuous! is immediately overwhelming in it’s music and vocals. A great track that gets you in the mood of LCD Soundsystem’s second album. This mood will never let go, and even be strengthened by such powerful tracks as North American Scum, Us V Them and my personal favorite, the title track Sound of Silver. This later is my favorite because it resembles much the minimal style of electronic music that I’ve played as a DJ in the past, and still gets to me.
The album is closed by the amazing New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down, a ballad that sobers you up and keeps lingering in your mind.
To me, this second album more than lives up to expectations. As I said in the beginning, this album is something special. It’s overwhelming and hits just the right spots of your mind. One to keep listening to.
