Daft Punk - Alive 2007

Dec 26, 13:28 by Stefan Koopmanschap

Daft Punk have been at it for quite a while now. They are regularly referred to as the Godfathers of the french house or filter-house, having made this style popular. In 1997, they released a live recording under the name Alive ‘97, and now ten years later, another live recording is being released. Unfortunately not as a DVD (as Daft Punk did wanted people who were there to keep remembering as it was, not as visuals on DVD would tell them how it was), but as a regular CD and a Deluxe Edition which contains a booklet with pictures taken at the live show, plus a bonus CD with some nice extra’s.

As I have the latter, I’ll be reviewing that one. Since most of the stuff is the audio part of the main CD, things I’ll say about that will also go for the regular version.

So first, let’s listen to the CD. It is excellent, bringing together many of the great tracks by Daft Punk, but in a very special version. The tracks seem more dancefloor-oriented, which brings a whole new dimension to their music. I really like it this way though. The music still has it’s catchy feeling, yet has even more drive than it originally has.

Another great thing is that the tracks have been mashed up a bit, creating one “track” out of two or three or even four tracks. They usually combine the strength of multiple tracks into one very great track. This must’ve been completely awesome to witness in real life.

The tracks that most catch my attention are “Too Long / Steam Machine”, “Around The World / Harder Better Faster Stronger”, “Aerodynamic Beats / Forget About The World”, “Prime Time Of Your Life / Brainwasher / Rollin’ And Scratchin’ / Alive” and “Superheroes / Human After All / Rock ‘n Roll”. And also the encore that is only available on the Bonus CD: “Human After All / Together / One More Time (Reprise) / Music Sounds Better With You”.

Concluding very shortly about the music: It simply blows you away!

Aside from the music, the Deluxe Edition contains a booklet with 54 full color pages containing mostly photo’s taken at the live shows of Daft Punk’s Alive 2007 tour. Beautiful pictures that really seem to capture the atmosphere there. It’s hard to tell for me though, as I have not been at one of the live shows unfortunately. However, there is some more help in getting into the atmosphere, as the Bonus CD also contains a data track that can be watched on a computer, including a video version of Harder Better Faster Stronger. Now if that doesn’t get you in a daft mood, I don’t know what will.

Alive 2007 is a document of Daft Punk at this moment in time, confirming their status as legendary artists doing nothing but good music. Excellent stuff!
